USGBC - South Florida Organizing Group Establishes Web Site and Sponsors LEED Training Class

Community Greenhouse Foundation - For immediate release
February 4, 2004, Miami, Florida

Four months ago a group of over 25 professionals from different sectors of the building industry met with the ambition to establish a United States Green Building Council Chapter in South Florida. In a short time it became evident that there are many (over 234) current USGBC members spread throughout Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties who embraced the idea and felt it was overdue.

The fledgling group is already joining forces with other local design organizations to bring training and information about the principles of green building to the professional community. In March, the USGBC will hold a LEED training workshop to be hosted by the IIDA - International Interior Design Association, Miami Chapter and the USGBC South Florida Organizing Group. The workshop is an all-day introduction to green building techniques and the LEED rating system and will be held on March 4.

The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™ is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. Members of the U.S. Green Building Council representing all segments of the building industry developed LEED and continue to contribute to its evolution.

“Clients interested in high-performance building, including the federal government and many local governments and institutions in other regions are starting to require LEED certification to ensure that their projects are designed and operated at the state of the art in environmentally sensitive design. There is a lot of interest among all the professions in getting our region’s design community up to speed and we are looking forward to making the local chapter a useful resource. The LEED training workshops are a way for professionals to become familiar the fundamentals of green building and we are excited about sponsoring our first workshop with the IIDA,” says Carolyn Mitchell, the USGBC South Florida Organizing Group Leader. Those interested in registering for the March 4 workshop can do so on-line at the USGBC website.
